Cranes

This noisy squadron of cranes flew over our house yesterday afternoon on its way north. Which means that spring is definitely on its way too.

Hi Lesley, great pic. These cranes must cross France in an almost diagonal direction SW to NE.
Two were seen on the Solway Firth this weekend (must have dodgy sat nav's)
I think the collective noun for cranes is a sedge, flying or a herd on the ground.

The heart leaps up even with just a photo!

And the word sedge, exactly what I wanted to know, Ronnie. Had a long conversation with my father yesterday as to whether skein would do for cranes!

This is so beautiful and moving! I'm longing for spring and for the return of the swifts!

That is indeed a happy sight. Spring is so elusive, I went out without a coat on Saturday, what joy! It was 11 degrees, that is tropical for Scotland at this time of year (as you will know), but the sun has gone, and sleet is forecast tomorrow.
