A few ideas have fleetingly tickled my blogging muscle over the past few days, and then evaporated. Today I saw the ophthalmologist and he told me that no, I was not a good candidate for surgery because visually it's downhill all the way from now on.
He prescribed variable lenses - granny glasses. He also said that I should wear my specs as much as possible and reserve my lenses for when I want to look smart (I think "pour quand vous sortez danser" was his exact phrase).
Also, did you know that there have been no scientific studies into the long term effects of wearing soft contact lenses 16 hours a day for twenty years? I am a guinea pig.
Anyway, I briefly thought about turning those little gems into a far-reaching meditation on the niggling inevitability of the march of time. But I'm feeling a bit too decrepit tonight.

As a recent victim of a 'know-it-all' eye doctor quack who said I needed glasses, I feel your pain. Stay strong though... I've nearly finished my time machine Delorian so the 'inevitable march' can be halted.

PS Why is Mary Whitehouse on your blog?
Downhill as in gentle slope, or black run?
The human body is a marvel but there are a few serious design flaws.
me and my gas permeables are still rubbing along just fine after...ooh how many years...
55- 15, 40 years...
mind you I have to wear reading glasses with them, or glasses with progressive lenses.
But otherwise I am so short sighted I cannot see the first letter on the chart
I've made a virtue of necessity. I get all my glasses on eBay. I just type in 'vintage spectacles' and make my picks. For around a fiver a time, I now have a modest collection of antique frames, two of which I wear daily, one for general and the other for reading. Not a solution for everyone, as the snap above demonstrates.
You can only wear them to go out dancing?? Does he think you wont "pull" if your wearing specs?
Well that is what Dorothy Parker said, le laquet!
"Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses"
Charmant!
Is it Mary Whitehouse?
Not Mary Whitehouse, just little OLD me (with a little help from facebookyourself.com). Thanks for all the comments.
Well good lord above, and what sweet dimples you have!
Yearbookyourself.com?
Neil: Oops, yes that's the one. What is this Facebook thing they speak of anyway?
It's 'social networking for the digital age' Lesley. Basically the same stuff we used to do in the park all summer as kids or around the fringes of pubs as teenagers. But it's quite good though... very simple, clean application and good for catching up/staying in touch with old friends and family without ever having to actually call or go visit them!!!
