Seasonal Smorgesbord

(Spot the school-made tree decoration)

Tripping over : doctor’s sets (multiple), Darth Vader masks, Star Wars DVDs, castles, magnetix, fairy costumes, cars, binoculars, pick-up-sticks ……….

Eating : dates, chocolates, wonderful curry made from leftovers (actually better than the original dishes it was cobbled from), foie gras, mini Christmas cake, mince pies and other goodies sent by Mum. An entire side of smoked salmon is no more.

Drinking : Loupiac 1996, Château Maison Blanche (Médoc), Chiroulet, and the occasional G&T

Reading : Kevin MacNeil’s The Stornoway Way (a present from Mum) which is absolutely, definitely one of my best books of 2005. Steeped in Famous Grouse and Hebridean angst peppered with gaelic phrases and the odd unforgettable pun. About to begin The Child that Books Built by Francis Spufford.

Watching : trying to find a minute to watch the Martin Scorcese film No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (present from P.)

Being : very touchy-feely at an interactive exhibition called Très Toucher at the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle in Bordeaux this afternoon.

Getting ready for : New-Year celebrations with friends in the Périgord.

Hope you are all having a wonderfully indulgent time too.

OK I have a question. Christmas aside. Just how do you read all these books? You have a job, two adrenalin fuelled children, a busy lifestyle. How do you do it? I'm still struggling through a book I started in 2004.

Enjoy your G&T (we bought some today) and have a very happy New Year. See you all in 2006.

Sarah: I admit that I occasionally neglect my children if I'm at a really good bit in a book (dinner, you want dinner?. Happy New Year to you too when it comes.

I rationalize time with books as 'setting a good example for my kids.' ... sorta like "See girls? Daddy LIKES to read a good book. You should find your book and come read with me instead of worrying about what we'll have for lunch." :D

Happy New Year wishes all around.

As I cycle past the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle every day I better stop soon and go to the Très Toucher exhibition before it is too late.
My brother in law went to Splendeur de Venise 1500-1600 at the Galerie des beaux arts and said it is wonderful.

I know from experience that Nathan's approach works because I've been using the method for years now. I too like to think of it as setting an example. The result? My older son (14) loves reading a lot and the younger one (7) just started reading his first book (he's on page 104 right now - I'm regularly updated).
A happy new year to you, Lesley.

Confinement

Being confined indoors most of the day, just the four of us, is reminding me of the days when my children were wee and most of our weekends ...
